The more I read about the Ghomeshi Affair, the more perturbed I become. The outcome, thus far, is better than one might have hoped, with victims coming forward publicly, associated PR firms dropping him as a client, and, it would appear, public opinion turning against him.
Positive outcomes, however, don’t make this any less infuriating. Domestic abuse, tragically, happens every day. And yet. When it’s a public figure, having the benefit of his fame and influence to seek victims, who has power to influence the media because he is the media, who has maintained this pattern of behaviour for years without any obvious consequences, it somehow feels worse, or perhaps more personal, and it really speaks to the realities of rape culture. People, from victims to acquaintances to distant citizens had some knowledge of the troublesome nature of Ghomeshi’s, but could not credibly discuss it in the public domain due to his fame, due to the inevitable backlash that would arise after accusing a celebrated public figure. I have no doubt that there will be people who, despite all of this, will continue to defend Ghomeshi and his actions.
The reality is that the balance of power renders any accusations, no matter how truthful, incredibly difficult to pass off credibly - it’s so easy for a powerful defendant to twist the dialogue in their favour, misrepresent evidence, pull the twines of their influence. It’s no surprise that such allegations often go unpublished until multiple sources have come forward, or that once a story is published, others will come forward as well - any individual believing themselves to be alone in their experience could reasonably be apprehensive of the intense spotlight and doubt placed on them.
It shouldn’t be this way. In a fair and just world, a criminal wouldn’t have the opportunity to openly assault victim after victim before being denounced. Victims wouldn’t fear being further victimized for telling their stories. I’m sure that many people trusted Ghomeshi’s post when it was first published - recognizing the stereotypical “jilted lover”, maybe even hating her for ruining his career. This automatic trust arises, I think, not due to any innate validity of his story, but rather from the common storyline (incorrect though it is) that false accusations of abuse are common among women who are just out for attention, or are seeking to unjustly take someone down. Ghomeshi’s post (probably) engendered sympathy and goodwill, while an equally credible story from an accusing voice would almost certainly have generated anger and hundreds or thousands of hateful comments.
This must not continue. Those who wish to speak out, whether to gain closure for themselves or to prevent further assaults on others, shouldn’t have to fear bullies, trolls, further threats of violence. We must foster an atmosphere of open dialogue, in which even a lone victim can have their story heard, and believed, in order to move forward as a culture.
This must not continue.

100% confident that all of these people are standing on stools hidden under the fabric. Ain’t nobody got legs that long.
I have eaten all of my cake. I think I shall probably starve to death.
It’s coming up on a year now since I got my current job as a pizza delivery girl, and I thought this would be a good time to delve into the little ever-expanding “WTFPIZZA” note I keep on my cell that helps me remember some of my more, uh - interesting deliveries.
So without further…

Going hiking this weekend and I’m SO STOKED for it!!!
For the last hour and a half, I’ve been listening to the people upstairs play a single note over, and over, and over again - repeating it once every few seconds. STOP IT!
